Adult learners have skills, experiences, and knowledge that may be able to assist them in attaining formally nationally recognised units or qualifications (outside the traditional classroom). This process is known as Recognition of Prior Learning.
RPL is one type of assessment pathway learners may undertake to attain formal qualifications in the adult vocational education and training (AVET) sector. The integrity of such qualifications remain intact and is most suitable to those learners with a wealth of experience from the workforce who are looking to expand their careers.
All relevant formal and informal prior learning and experiences will be considered, however, not all learners will possess this. Our qualified assessors will discuss this at interview and should this be the case, further tailored study solutions will be presented to you for consideration.
A RPL assessment uses your existing lived experiences and one of our assessors will assist you in mapping them to attain formal qualifications. RPL is a way of gaining credit for what you have already done, which may reduce the amount of time you spend studying.

RPL is a form of assessment that recognises skills and knowledge gained through:
- formal training conducted by industry or education
- work experience
- life experience
RPL is a formal process and, instead of submitting assessment tasks, you need to submit evidence of what you have done in the most recent past.
Evidence needs to cover both your performance in a particular job role and your associated knowledge.
Examples of evidence include:
- a past qualification,
- qualification transcripts,
- performance appraisal reports, references,
- a CV, resume, a job description,
- a third-party report, files and documents,
- personal self-assessment explaining your experience,
- observations by a qualified assessor,
- an interview with your assessor.
